RTO’s failure at Majestic bus stand

RTO’s failure at Majestic bus stand

All rules are ignored.  It is illegal to operate private buses within 500 meters of the Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic bus station.  Private buses stand lineup in front of the Majestic bus stations creating traffic block and congestion.   The negligence of the RTO and the Transport Department to enforce the orders to curb the menace has contributed to this mess.  Reports say an average citizen spends more than 240 hours stuck in jams every year. If you’ve been fretting about traffic jams during the day, spare a thought for the people who travel at night as private buses choke four critical points in Bengaluru.

The whole system has turned a blind eye towards the illegal operation of private buses. This is affecting KSRTC’s business apart from congesting the majestic area.  KSRTC is suffering losses due to this problem.

A test drive revealed that this problem is due to the new trend of private buses coming on this stretch and parking by the roadside, besides people who park their private vehicles who do the same while dropping friends/relatives at the railway/metro stations.  Double parking along this arterial road (a national highway that connects Bengaluru and Pune) at this stretch poses a severe bottleneck which is the cause for the traffic gridlock.

Traffic rules are broken and Buses are parked all over the road

The buses are parked all over the road even as the drivers and conductors of these buses wait for passengers. This obstructs other motorists’ movement, causing a major, seemingly never-ending traffic gridlock in the night.  As this road is one of the major connecting points for other arterial roads, the traffic gridlock has a cascading effect, spreading to adjacent areas as well.

Majestic Bus Station

The Kempegowda bus terminus side of Dhanvantari Road – which starts from the point where Kempegowda (KG) Road ends and joins Platform Road towards Malleswaram – actually changes its avatar in the nights. Come night, and the road at the Majestic area side suddenly transforms into an ‘adda’ for all private interstate and intrastate buses, which causes a huge traffic jam that has its effects up to State Bank of Mysore Circle on KG Road.  As there is no escaping from KG Road that connects Majestic, all the connecting roads, too, get clogged in the night.

Transport Department

Some are of the opinion that the Officials are acting hand in glove with these permit holders.  According to the traffic police, the inspection of permits comes under the RTO and only they can ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Some sources at the Transport Department said the whole operation is controlled by “invisible hands” and it is preventing action against permit holders.  No serious attempt has been made to clear the traffic and congestion mess in Majestic.  Just as an eyewash some permits are canceled from time to time and after some time a new permit will be granted.

The nocturnal traffic jam hotspots of Bengaluru are quite surprising. Everybody at some point experience traffic jams in the daytime;  these areas are easy to go through in the daytime but the traffic turns monstrous in the nights.
