The Bengaluru Maha Nagara Palike on Saturday razed around 400 houses at Kariyammana Agrahara near Belandur as ‘encroachment’. Around 1500 people became homeless as the JCB razed houses to the ground reportedly done due to complaints from residents of nearby apartments.
The residents said that no prior notices were issued by the civic agency. The residents are maids, drivers, security guards, rag pickers. The homeless included school going children and senior citizens. Located next to an apartment complex, the residents are predominantly from the States of West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh and been living for 8 years.
According to BBMP officials, several warnings had been given to the residents as they were living as squatters on the private land. “There were enough announcements asking them to vacate the spot before demolition was taken up”.
BBMP officials said that the settlement was in proximity of the lake and was a violation of the buffer zone violations.
