Fake news is a type of  Yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media.

Meaning of Fake News

It is information that has been deliberately fabricated with the intention to deceive and mislead people into believing falsehoods.  It is disinformation that is presented as or is likely to be perceived as news.

“Fake news” has become a much used, hyped term in the so-called “post-truth” era that we live in. It is maligned.  Fake news has been fueling propaganda and hate speech and even violence.  News plays a particular role in a democratic society.

Media organizations, politicians, journalists and the general public have allowed digital revolution.  The revolution has its opportunities, to turn into ‘digital dominance’ by a few internet players.  This has allowed a place where fictional and fake news flourishes freely.

Effects of digital fake news

According to the ER’s Digital Commissioner, Mariya Gabriel fake news is a disease that the society needs to be vaccinated.

Misinformation and its correlate, propaganda, is being used for a long time by the powerful to gain political or religious legitimacy, inspire wars, and motivate movements.  Exposing people to visual or narrative information on a given event not only influences their interpretation but also their memory of the event.

As online users consume more and more information, the media mix is changing and risks are growing.  In the Indian System, a large volume of information in local and regional language has made it difficult to flush out the fake news.

Need to curb fake news:

Need of the hour is to develop a cybersecurity policy and balance it in a way that the rules do not hinder the freedom of speech.  Unscrupulous elements target individuals on social media to build an echo chamber where views which are opposing in nature are blocked.
