Padma awards – 2019 was announced on 25.01.2019. It is one of the highest civilian awards in our country. The padma awards are conferred in three categories viz., Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
History – Padma Awards :
Padma Awards were instituted in 1954. It is to be awarded to citizens of India in recognition of their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the arts, education, industry, literature, science, sports, medicine, social service and public affairs.
It has also been awarded to some distinguished individuals who were not citizens of India but did contribute in various ways to India.
Meaning of “Padma” awards :
On its obverse, the words “Padma”, meaning lotus in Sanskrit and “Shri”, a Sanskrit-derived honorific equivalent to ‘Mr.’ or ‘Ms.’ (ie., “Noble One in Blossom”), appear in Devanagari above and below a lotus flower. The geometrical pattern on either side is in burnished bronze. All embossing is in white gold.
Who decides Padma awards?
All nominations received for Padma awards are placed before the Padma Awards Committee. The committee in constituted by the Prime Minister every year. The Padma Awards Committee headed by the Cabinet Secretary and includes Home Secretary to the President.
The committee also includes 4 to 6 eminent persons as members. The recommendations of the committee are submitted to the Prime Minister and the President of India for approval.
Padma Shri award :
Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award after the Bharat Ratna, the Padna Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the Government of India on every year on India’s Republic day.

- Prabhu Deva – Art-Dance
Prabhu Deva is an Indian dance choreographer, film director, Producer and actor, who has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada films. In a career spanning 25 years.
He has performed and designed a wide range of dancing styles and has garnered two National Film Awards for Best Choreography.
He is honored with Padma Awards for the this year.
- Rohini Godbole, Science,& Engineering – Nuclear
Prof. Rohini Godbole is a Professor at the Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science. Professor Rohini Godbole is a particle physicist best known for her work at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
She is been honored Padma award this year.
- Sharada Srinivasan, Other – Archaecology
Sharada Srinivasan is an archaeologist specializing in the scientific study of art, archaeology, archae-metallurgy and culture. She is associated with the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru.
She is an Honorary University Fellow at the University of Exeter, United Kingdom. Mrs. Srinivasan is also an exponent of classical Bharata Natyam dancer.
She is been honored Padma ward this year.
- Rajeev Tharanath, Art – Music – Sarod
Rajeev Taranath was born in Bengaluru on 17 October 1932. He received his initial training in vocal music from his father Pandit Taranath. He gave his first public vocal performance
when he was nine years old. Rajeev was singing for the All India Radio before he was twenty.
He is been honored Padma award this year in the category Music for his outstanding achievement in Sarod.
- Saalumarada Thimmakka, Social Work – Environment.
Saalumarada Thimmakka also known as Alada Marada Timakka is an Indian environmentalist. She is noted for her work in planting and tending to 385 banyan trees along a four-kilometre stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur.
She is been honored Padma award this year for her social work.
