Abalashrama

Year of Establishement 1905
History (Brief) Abalashrama, situated in Dr. D V G Road in Basavanagudi, Bangalore City, is one of the oldest registered voluntary social organisations in the city.

Late Sri Chakravarthy Venkatavarada Iyengar paved the way for establishing Abalashrama at the dawn of 20th century by marrying Smt Krishnamma, a childhood widow. The noble ideals of Arya Samaj, his personal zeal for helping deprived women, and the support he received from his life partner sowed the seeds for founding this unique institution. Having resolved to make a beginning, the couple converted their own modest home into a sanctuary for abandoned women and orphan girls in 1905.

Soon the need was felt to expand the activity. Abalashrama moved to its own spacious premises on Dr D V G Road ( formerly known as Nagasandra Road ) in 1911 where it is continuing its activity even now. It was registered as a society in 1943-44 and an elected body took over the reigns of the organisation. It then started functioning as a full-fledged formal institution.

It is gratifying to recall that H H the Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar, graced the function organised to celebrate the Golden Jubilee in 1964.

Maharaja of Mysore-2

It was fortunate that a number of dedicated men and women came forward to offer their services and have built the institution on a strong foundation. It could render sincere and uninterrupted service during the past hundred years and more. It is the oldest institution of this kind in Karnataka.
