Indian Red Cross Society

Main Focous To provide relief in times of disasters/emergencies and promote health & care of vulnerable people and communities.
History (Brief)
  • A collaboration between the St. John Ambulance Association and the British Red Cross, provided relief services to affected soldiers of First World War.
  • Sir Claude Hill (Chairman of the Joint War Committee in India), a member of the then Viceroy’s Executive Council, introduced a bill to the Indian Legislative Council on the 3rd of March 1920, to set up the Indian Red Cross Society independent of the British Red Cross.
  • The Bill was passed on 17th March 1920 as the Indian Red Cross Society Act and later became Parliament Act XV of 1920 with the approval of the Governor General on the 20th March1920
  • On 7th of June, 1920, fifty members from the Indian branch of Joint War Committee were formally nominated to constitute the Indian Red Cross Society with Sir William Malcolm Hailey as chairman.
