Trade license will be canceled now by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for those bars and restaurants who are violating the guidelines of smoking zones.
According to the notification by the Government of India, any establishment such as bar, restaurant, pub with a seating capacity of less than 30 are not allowed to have smoking zones. Those establishments which have more than seating capacity of 30 should have a mandatory designated smoking zone with a no-objection certificate from the BBMP tobacco control cell.
Any establishment who is not meeting with the specifications and guidelines of the palike will lose the trade license.
According to BBMP Chief health officer, Manoranjan Hegde, approximately 50% of the establishments in the city have flouted the specifications.
This drive was brought into force to reduce the ill effects of passive smoking. Passive smoking has been one of the most neglected health hazards in any metro city.
