Removal of OFC’s some parts of Bengaluru is facing telecom and internet outages as the BBMP has undertaken a massive drive to remove unauthorized optical fiber cables (OFC). The civic body has been accused of removing even legitimate cables.
The outages are particularly severe in the central business district (CBD) areas such as MG Road, Church Street, Brigade Road, besides in localities like Sanjaynagar, Budigere, and Doddakallasandra. The BBMP began the drive on the orders of Deputy Minister G Parameshwara.
The OFC companies are most irresponsible and do not lay cables in a regulated way. They dig the roads haphazardly and then do not care to cover it up properly. It creates potholes everywhere. Besides endangering the lives of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders, the illegal OFC’s that are carelessly slung over trees and poles are an eyesore in many parties of Bengaluru.
The surprising fact is that the government permitted installations for the past decade (legal or illegal ) and collected the usual kickbacks and haft had and now suddenly they wake up and start dismantling so-called illegal installations and putting the common man to suffer. Are the government and BBMP not accountable? According to some citizens, the officials who allowed the illegal cables and mobile towers should also be punished.
The unauthorized removal of total cable comes to 504 km. The cables removed according to the zone wise are as under :
East Zone – 148 km, West Zone – 115 km, South Zone – 92 km, Bommanahalli – 48 km, Dasarahalli – 4 km, Mahadevapura – 69.9 km, RR Nagar – 23.9 km and Yelahanka – 5.2 km.
