BIFFes – Bengaluru International Film Festival 2019

BIFFes – Bengaluru International Film Festival 2019 is starting on February 2019 at Bengaluru.  This is the 11th edition of the film festival.

The festival is being organized by the Karnataka Chalanachitra (Film) Academy for Government of Karnataka.  The screening of the movies and other events are scheduled to be held at Orion Mall in Rajajinagar.

The film festival :

Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, is an important centre of International film culture in keeping with Karnataka’s glorious heritage and the State’s achievements in the fields of literature, fine arts, and cinema.

The Kannada Film Industry has made significant contribution to the quality and range of cinematic expression and grown to produce over a 200 films every year. Films from Karnataka have won national and international recognition and critical acclaim at various International Film Festivals.

Different sections at the BIFFes :

The Eleventh edition of BIFFes is held during February 21 – 28, 2019, in Bengaluru.  It will have different sections. Selection of films will be made by expert committees.

Like in the previous editions, Competitive sections for Asian, Indian and Kannada Cinema will also be held with handsome Cash prizes. An award for Lifetime achievement is also part of the film festival.

The festival will also host various forums for academic interactions on Filmmaking & Film Appreciation like seminars, Workshops, Master classes etc., for the benefit of film professionals, discerning audiences and students on different aspects of cinema.

Homage at BIFFes :

The 11th edition will pay homage to late actor-politician M.H. Ambareesh.  The actors memories will be part of the event. 5 films of Ambareesh will be screened and they are his on screen debut Nagarahaavu, Shubhamangala, Rnganayaki, Paduvarahalli Pandavaru and Antha.

The tribute also includes Mrinal Sen, M.Bhaktavatsala, M.N.Vyasa Rao and C.H.Lokanath.

The festival showcases the works of the outstanding filmmakers in the film industry.  This includes Swedish Director Ingmar Bergman and Shaji Karun, Malayali Director and Cinematographer.

Movies to be screen at BIFFes :

The number of films is expected to reach 200 Nos.  The list includes Oscar-nominated films and movies which have bagged major awards.

Under Asian category, out of 67 submissions,, 15 are selected.  Under Indian category, out of 36 entries 12 are selected and under the Kannada category out of 68 entries 16 are selected.

The other movies which will be screen includes ‘Making of Mahatma’ by Shyam Benegal, ‘Gandhi my Father’ by Firoz Abbas Khan and “Kurmavatara’ by Girish Kasaravalli.
