Free Wifi – across Bengaluru

Free Wifi at 3500 locations across Bengaluru will be soon  a reality.  The Wifi will be provided by the civic body BBMP.

Bengaluru gears up for free-connectivity in public places.

What is Wifi?

Wi-Fi is the name of a popular wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections. 

Availability of Wifi services

A WiFi network makes use of radio waves to transmit information across a network. The computer should include a wireless adapter that will translate data sent into a radio signal. This same signal will be transmitted, via an antenna, to a decoder known as the router.

Free Wifi at public places:

India’s tech hub Bengaluru will soon get free wireless connectivity to access interest in public places.  The facility of free Wifi will be provided with the State Government’s assistance in Benglauru.

DCM G.Parameshwara had recently inaugurated a free Wifi facility as Govindaracjanagar.  The facility at this ward provides internet facility around a 3 km radius.

According to the Corporator Umesh Shetty of Govindarajanagar , the internet speed in his ward is 100 Mbps.  One can download /upload 1 GB data per day. 

After having a series of meetings with the State’s IT Department, the BBMP have finalized 3500 locations across the city.   These places are to be connected through Wifi in all the 198 wards in the city.

Work on providing free Wifi :

All the work connecting with providing free Wifi will be taken up in  a phased manner.  The connection will be given in 4 months. 

4 companies have come forward to provide the service. The process of finalizing the list will be taken up soon.

Tariffs – free Wifi :

The free Wifi services were announced in the BBMP Budget for the year 2018-19.  But the project has not taken off.

For the first 30 minutes the Wifi will be free.  After 30 minutes commercial rates as fixed by the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will be charged to the users.
