B.Bhadre Gowda of JD(S) is been elected as the new Deputy Mayor of Bengaluru.

New Deputy Mayor

The post of deputy Mayor was vacant for some time.  Barely a week after she was elected as Bengaluru’s new deputy Mayor, Ramila Umashankar, the Janata Dal (Secular) Corporator from Kaveripura ward, died after she suffered a heart attack.  She was 44.

Following the death of Deputy Mayor Ramila Umashankar, the regional commissioner had ordered BBMP to conduct the polls for the post.

Appointment of Deputy Mayor :

As Bhadre Gowda was the only person to file nomination for the post, Regional Commissioner declared  him elected unopposed.

He had held the position of Chairman of Standing Committee in 2016.   The Bengaluru City’s new Deputy Mayor B. Bhadre Gowda is 52 years old.  He is from JD(S) party.  He represents Nagpura ward (Ward No.67) in Mahalakshmi Layout assembly constituency.  He is a 1st time corporator.

The New Deputy Mayor’s demand as soon as he got elected for the post was a new Multi Utility Vehicle.  He requested the Bengaluru Maha Nagara Palike (BBMP) to replace his “too old” official car with a new top-end Toyota Innova Crysta.

As the State is run by a coalition government (JD(S) and congress) there is an understanding that the post of the Mayor will be held by Congress and Deputy Mayor post by JD(S).

Standing Committee:

The elections were held for the positions of chairperson for 12 Standing Committee’s of the BBMP council.  The chairmen for 4 of the Standing committees will be given to the JD(S) corporators in the BBMP council.

The JD(S) party is demanding to retain the post of chairman of Tax and Finance Standing committee.

Prior to the elections, there were differences of opinion between the congress and the BJP about the nominations to different Standing Committees.

The New Deputy Mayor’s priority is to make Bengaluru clean and green.  He has his own ideas for the city and is trying to implement it in a short span of time.
