Arpinder Singh bags gold in Men’s Triple jump

Arpinder Singh  (30 December 1992) is an Indian triple jumper.  He claimed a bronze medal in the sport in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He is supported by Anglian Medal Hunt company, a company that supports young Indian athletes towards international competitive success, with an especial aim at the Olympics.

Arpinder who has been without a medal in multi-sporting events since winning a bronze in the 2014 commonwealth games on August 29, 2018, which is celebrated as National Sports Day in India won a gold medal in triple jump event in 18th Asian games.

He covered a distance of 16.77 meters to bag the gold medal. He became the second Indian sportsperson to achieve this landmark. Before him, Mohinder Singh Gill won a gold medal in triple jump event in 1970 Bangkok Asian games event.  Ruslan Kurbanov of Uzbekistan took the silver with a best jump of 16.62m while Shua Cao of China was 3rd with an effort of 16.56m.

There was a familiar face cheering Arpinder Singh on behind the triple jump area at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium on Wednesday. It was Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the shot putter who had won India’s first athletics gold at these Asian Games. During Toor’s event, Arpinder who is his Games village roommate had been in the stands behind him, doing a Facebook live of the event, providing live commentary to his fans. Now it was Toor’s turn to return the favor.

Congratulations to Arpinder Singh for the gold medal.  It was an absolutely top effort. His performance has made every Indian happy and proud.
