Abhishek Verma who is 29 years old (August 1, 1989) is a shooter. The lack of experience did not deter him and the Haryana shooter is now the India No 1 in 10m air pistol, shooting 585 in qualification and then winning the gold beating Deepak Sharma, Jitu Rai and Amanpreet Singh in the Selection Trials. What makes his success even more remarkable is the fact that this shooter started competing only three years ago.
For a hobby shooter turned professional, making his debut at an event as prestigious as the Asian Games is a fascinating story. But his journey to the India berth is even more interesting. Before picking up a pistol, Verma has tried his hand at law, Indian Administrative Service and computer science. However, he found his true calling once he moved from his native Haryana to Gurgaon. In 2015, a shooting range opened near where he was staying at Hissar and he joined it. He started it as a hobby, not as a career. The hobby led to Verma representing his university in the All India University Games and a fifth-place finish there made him participate in the Shooting Nationals for the first time in 2015. But it was a long journey to participate in the Asian Games.
Now he is a star and has won a medal for India. Congratulations Abhishek Verma on your achievement
