Manu Bhaker became the first shooter from India to claim a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games 2018 taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina with a spectacular performance.
Manu Bhaker shot 236.5 to stand at the top of the points table in the eight women final 10m air pistol event to clinch gold. Manu started well by shooting 50.1 after the first five shots. She was closely followed by the Russian, but despite a few 9s in between, Manu maintained the top position among the finalists till the 18th shot. Meanwhile, Iana Enina from Russia won the silver medal with a score of 235. 9 and Nino Khutsiberidze settled for the bronze medal. Earlier, Manu Bhaker, who was India’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympics, topped the qualifying with 576, which included a series of 95, 96, 96, 96, 95, 98, finishing second and third in the qualification.
This is India’s medal from shooting at the youth Olympic games after Shanu Mane and Mehuli Ghosh. This medal is a big moral boost for Manu who is 16 years old, as she had missed winning medals at the Asian Games in Palembang and also at the World Championship in Incheon.
The teenager from Jhajjar, Haryana had earlier won gold at the Commonwealth Games ín Gold Coast, Junior World (Sydney) and the ISSF World Cup in Mexico (Individual and mixed). Bhaker also bagged a podium finish in the 2017 Asian Junior Championships with a silver medal.
Congratulations Manu Bhaker.
